The Washingtonian staff share their favorite places to watch the fireworks in DC in order to avoid the downtown madness. Here’s what they came up with:

“There are great fireworks at King Farm in Rockville. Parking is difficult, but it’s walkable from the Shady Grove Metro.” —Leslie Milk

“Lake Kittamaqundi near Columbia Town Center has a really great lakefront setup for fireworks.” —Hayley Garrison Phillips

“National Cathedral has some great views—and you have the Beauvoir School playground for kids to hang out on before the fireworks begin.” —Katerina Savopoulos

“The Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Alexandria offers a superb view straight up the Potomac to the Washington Monument, minus the traffic and crowds.” —Kim Olsen

“The Old Town Alexandria fireworks are awesome—and usually after July 4 (this year, July 8).” —Ann Marie Grills
“I enjoy going to Old Town Manassas, close to where I grew up. You can find a nice spot near the Harris Pavilion. Just don’t do what I did a few years ago and sit where the lampposts are blocking the show.” —Erin Cafferty
