COBOL designer Jean Sammett dies at 89

Jean Sammett

While many consider Grace Hopper the “mother of COBOL,” she was not one of the six people who designed the language.

“I yield to no one in my admiration for Grace,” Sammet said. “But she was not the mother, creator or developer of COBOL.”

Ms. Sammet and five other programmers designed COBOL in two weeks. Their proposal was accepted in November 1959 by the computer makers they worked for and the Pentagon. Learn more about Ms. Sammett and the beginning of computer programming at The New York Times.
